Run It Back – Kite Man: Hell Yeah! Season 1 Review

In this episode of Cape or Cap: A Black Nerd Superhero Podcast, we’re gliding into the latest season of Kite Man: Hell Yeah! as Kite Man flies up to the next level by opening a bar in the shadow of Lex Luthor`s Legion of Doom; nobody said serving cold ones to the most dangerous rogues outside of Arkham Asylum would be easy.

In our “Run It Back” segment, we break down the season's best and worst moments, focusing on character development experienced by Kite Man, Golden Glider, Bane and the rest of the bar patrons, story twists, and action-packed scenes. From , we ask the real question: does the show take new heights like a kite with its cape or is it a total cap?

Speaker:

Night, man, I just felt like it was, like, a little weird. So I

Speaker:

was, I'm wondering what made, what made them want to do, like,

Speaker:

all these steps of just like, let's get let's like, almost

Speaker:

feels like they were trying to do the typical hero route of

Speaker:

like, Let's strip him up his powers and show the man behind

Speaker:

the kite. But it

Speaker:

doesn't, it doesn't really work in the same way,

Speaker:

stripping of his non powers.

Speaker:

Hi, I'm Chamar Griffith

Speaker:

and I'm Andrew Tejada. We're going through superhero

Speaker:

productions to let you know if they're still fun or the hype

Speaker:

around it was dumb on Cape

Speaker:

or cap a Black Nerd superhero podcast.

Speaker:

Welcome to this week's installment of Cape or cap a

Speaker:

Black Nerd superhero podcast. My name is Chamar Griffith co named

Speaker:

comic Shands and I am Andrew Tejada, codename Arete. Andrew

Speaker:

and I have known each other since 1996 that was the year

Speaker:

that the Los Alamos kite festival started in New Mexico,

Speaker:

the largest of its kind. In northern New Mexico, there is

Speaker:

kite building workshops, food and for kids, for children

Speaker:

injured kites, kites, kites. Kites is all I'm reading this

Speaker:

description,

Speaker:

hell yeah. I'm glad that kites do get their recognition,

Speaker:

because I remember girl. I'm not saying growing up in Barbados, I

Speaker:

was equal I was born. My family is from Barbados, but my mom has

Speaker:

always shared fond memories of growing up, and she was used to

Speaker:

talk about like they used to fly kites and whatnot. So I'm kind

Speaker:

of glad to see that it wasn't just, you know, like a random

Speaker:

thing that only you heard about from an older generation or on

Speaker:

TV. It definitely was out there, especially in 1996 which wasn't

Speaker:

that long ago, people that was not 30 years ago, okay, that

Speaker:

actually was not 30 years ago, nope,

Speaker:

nope. Uh, but that love of kites probably inspired one individual

Speaker:

in particular, a person who, gotta say, up until very

Speaker:

recently, probably never made it on anyone's radar for comic

Speaker:

books or television or anything like that. There's probably,

Speaker:

like a few people who love them, but I gotta say, if it wasn't

Speaker:

for one particular show, we wouldn't have the opportunity

Speaker:

today to talk about the first season of the spin off series

Speaker:

called kite man. Hell yeah. So with 10 episodes this TV ma

Speaker:

show, this is no question about it being PG 13, this TV ma show

Speaker:

wrapped up his freshman season, effectively creating a spin off

Speaker:

from DC universes to HBO Max's to now just Max's, I guess

Speaker:

Harley Quinn. So we got show runners that include Dean Laurie

Speaker:

quite famous. Dean is quite famous for the work he's done

Speaker:

that includes producing, writing and directing credits across

Speaker:

Arrested Development. My wife and kids. Major pain. I zombie.

Speaker:

Now that new series, Damon Wayans and Damon Wayne's Junior

Speaker:

Papa's house, I think, or something like that. And

Speaker:

ultimately, one of my favorite limited series of all time,

Speaker:

powerless the DC show, where it was just like a bunch of people

Speaker:

who don't have powers running an insurance company for all the

Speaker:

antics that are happening in the world of the DC Universe. Yeah,

Speaker:

that one again way out of its time. I think it would do pretty

Speaker:

well now, but it was just way too early. I'm sorry, guys,

Speaker:

yeah, I do have a similar grip about because, um, there's a

Speaker:

show now on max I've been watching called the franchise,

Speaker:

where it is just basically mocking all the stuff that we've

Speaker:

experienced, going through and learning and loving superhero

Speaker:

stuff. So movies getting shelved for tax credits and cameo, the

Speaker:

work that goes behind the scenes. So trying to make a

Speaker:

cameo work when sometimes actors don't like each other powerless

Speaker:

would have really killed it right now, I could see three

Speaker:

seasons in the movie at the bare minimum. It's yeah, RIP, RIP

Speaker:

powerless, including another show runner, though for Dean, we

Speaker:

have Katie rich. Katie, did you know how the infamy for a tweet

Speaker:

back in 2017 during a certain inauguration? Well, that

Speaker:

somehow, though, was one of the many things that was skyrocket

Speaker:

her to prior to that moment, she was already an SNL writer. She

Speaker:

was one of the few writers actually, that was working

Speaker:

exclusively on the weekend update, and she would then spend

Speaker:

six years of SNL before hopping on over to Harley Quinn to Now

Speaker:

eventually becoming its executive producer for season

Speaker:

five. Oh, wow. That's good. That's yeah, well earned. Yes.

Speaker:

Definitely. So these two came together to put together our

Speaker:

kite, man, hell yes, show, which currently has a 92% on Rotten

Speaker:

Tomatoes and a 90% from the audience score, which, I gotta

Speaker:

say, is

Speaker:

pretty surprising to me. I did not expect this to hit 90s.

Speaker:

Yeah. I mean, you look at some superhero movies, I don't think

Speaker:

even like Captain America, civil war has a 90% like this has a 90

Speaker:

it's kind of crazy. But is it overrated? We're talking about

Speaker:

it. Yes. All right. So now compiling this cast list, we got

Speaker:

Tim Oberg, who has a few acting credits here and there. Most

Speaker:

recently, you'll see him now in a couple of episodes of Abbot

Speaker:

elementary today, he is voicing Charles Chuck Brown, not Charlie

Speaker:

Brown. Let's not get confused that name, this actually does

Speaker:

not get thrown around in this show, but he is our titular

Speaker:

character, kite man, who has also been the voice of this

Speaker:

character since the Harley Quinn show. Next up his counterpart,

Speaker:

here we got Stephanie HSU as Lisa Snart, aka Golden Glider,

Speaker:

who is coming off of like a crazy run in life. As you know,

Speaker:

she was already killing it after everything, everything,

Speaker:

everywhere, all at once, and a bunch of other shows effectively

Speaker:

and movies just effectively rising her to stardom. So it is

Speaker:

quite interesting to see this particular actress to just

Speaker:

catapult this character and take a character, if you don't really

Speaker:

get too much shine of into this show. Here, James Adomian

Speaker:

returns as Bane from his first episode in the Harley Quinn

Speaker:

series. So very glad to see that this particular bang gets a lot

Speaker:

more credit here and there. Next up, Jonathan banks. This guy,

Speaker:

the list is just too long. But if you ever need a villain in

Speaker:

your movie, this is him. He's hidden. Yeah, he is him. He

Speaker:

voices the character Noonan, who owns the bar up until the

Speaker:

beginning of our series here, but he does hang around. So it's

Speaker:

very nice to see that we have the voice of Jonathan banks here

Speaker:

to contribute, along with Natasha Demetrio, who is voicing

Speaker:

malice. This is a character who serves as a bartender and the

Speaker:

god daughter of dark side. Gotta love it. Gotta love it. Next up

Speaker:

we got from the sopranos, Michael Imperioli as Joe and Moe

Speaker:

doubles. I forget which one he's supposed to be, because

Speaker:

this show is something.

Speaker:

Next up, uh, speaking of Abbott elementary from earlier today.

Speaker:

Uh, earlier today, like we just didn't say this, like five

Speaker:

seconds ago for y'all um, Janelle James is the queen of

Speaker:

fables, who takes over from Wanda Sykes, I believe it was in

Speaker:

the original Harley Quinn series. So kind of glad to see

Speaker:

that the Queen of fables, a character who has op power, in

Speaker:

my opinion, again, is continuing on. And last up, we got a couple

Speaker:

more. As we have few more great names who are joining the cast,

Speaker:

such as Keith David, who is the voice of dark side, Phil Lamar,

Speaker:

who is the voice of the sod, as well as a another superhero,

Speaker:

green superhero, but not this green superhero. You're thinking

Speaker:

of Margaret Cho who is Rebecca Chen, and last but not least, we

Speaker:

wanted to take this moment to dedicate this particular episode

Speaker:

to the one person here who is voicing Lex Luthor in one of his

Speaker:

final roles in his filmography, as we have The late Lance

Speaker:

Reddick here today, voicing in our series. Yeah, what a a

Speaker:

powerhouse, a towering actor gone far too soon. And as one of

Speaker:

his last roles, he absolutely killed it as Lex Luthor. And it

Speaker:

is, yeah. I hope his impact is just across all media. If you've

Speaker:

seen a John Wick movie, I hope you know him for more than John

Speaker:

Wick. Percy Jackson, he was great. Zeus for such the brief

Speaker:

time we had him. So I really savor this performance. And

Speaker:

yeah, he is definitely missed, and his his presence is and

Speaker:

absence is definitely felt. So once again, thank you, Lance

Speaker:

Reddick, for everything that you have contributed to our viewing

Speaker:

pleasure throughout the your years here on Earth. And know

Speaker:

that though you may be gone, you are never forgotten, and we

Speaker:

always will appreciate the amazing gravitas the voice that

Speaker:

you bring, as well as just like the fun that we heard in these

Speaker:

episodes that you brought and gave to us. So thank you. All

Speaker:

right, so with that, as we have mentioned in the past, in our

Speaker:

previous two episodes, this is a run it back series of shows that

Speaker:

we're doing. So these are shows that premiered. Like within the

Speaker:

summer of 2024 making sure that they get their highlight,

Speaker:

especially as we come to a close with 2024 season of shows,

Speaker:

bringing on the brand new level of things is going to be

Speaker:

happening in 2025 but wanted to make sure that, in case you're

Speaker:

feeling a little absent on trying to find something to

Speaker:

watch, here's something you can so with that, let's start the

Speaker:

season one review again. This won't be a full breakdown. This

Speaker:

will just be a conversation of the story, the characters, the

Speaker:

fight scenes or animation, as well as any scenes in particular

Speaker:

that stuck out to us, that we feel, that you might also enjoy.

Speaker:

So let's start and unroll the rate the string that is on the

Speaker:

spewal of this kite that we have, and do this cape or cap

Speaker:

review of the first season of kite man. Hell yeah, yeah. So

Speaker:

what is this will definitely be a less intricate recap than

Speaker:

other stories, because, yes, there is a running plot to kite

Speaker:

man that goes throughout, but it is very spread out. If it sounds

Speaker:

like the story section is not as long as 10 episodes, it's not

Speaker:

because things didn't happen. It's just because the major

Speaker:

things that happened are few and far between that really moved

Speaker:

the needle. But essentially, kite man is hired by Lex to

Speaker:

guard his Legion of doom as an aerial villain, because no other

Speaker:

aerial villains were available and kite man fails. So as a

Speaker:

revenge, Lex decides to buy kite man's favorite bar, noonans, but

Speaker:

kite man decides to beat Lex to the punch, and is after stealing

Speaker:

from a villain worse than Lex Luthor his dad, kite man, is

Speaker:

able to buy the bar noonans with his girlfriend, Golden Glider,

Speaker:

and now the shenanigans can really begin. Yes, we got a

Speaker:

bunch of things that happen, such as finding out that the

Speaker:

place is just a rundown piece of work, and also, because it is a

Speaker:

bar, we get those typical scenarios of like, you trying to

Speaker:

find people to add into the bar. You're trying to find people to

Speaker:

work at the bar. So we get the introduction to malice, new

Speaker:

character here. So I gotta say, I do appreciate and do love the

Speaker:

character malice in this particular setting, just because

Speaker:

it does add, like, that particular very cool for this

Speaker:

place, kind of vibe for an individual for especially for a

Speaker:

bar that's supposed to be like, kind of a dive bar. It also

Speaker:

gives Bane some more work, because after being, well, I

Speaker:

guess, shot out of a chair from the Legion of Doom, and

Speaker:

especially, and just essentially fired from the position, he now

Speaker:

works there, so it gives Bane, this particular Bane that we

Speaker:

personally love, based since, like all of Harley Quinn and our

Speaker:

previously covered Holiday Special, I'm glad to see that

Speaker:

this particular Bane gets more screen time and presence. So it

Speaker:

does, like you said, it does jump the needle a few times,

Speaker:

like we start with this typical setting of like, here are the

Speaker:

bar. Here's the bar. Here's trying to learn how to run a

Speaker:

business. Here are the bar patrons. Here's fighting against

Speaker:

another establishment that is very similar to our own opening

Speaker:

across the street. And then it immediately jumps into like

Speaker:

there's a room, there's an apartment above the bar. In the

Speaker:

apartment, there's a time traveling toilets. Yes, you

Speaker:

heard that right? If you take a dump on the toilet, you are

Speaker:

immediately teleported to the 1980s where, at the same time,

Speaker:

it is the day that Golden Glider reveals is the day that she

Speaker:

killed her parents after discovering this new ability of

Speaker:

hers that is basically like, I'm calling it the equivalent of

Speaker:

Superman solar flare, where it's just like there's nothing safe

Speaker:

after this thing. Yeah, so in going back to the day, they try

Speaker:

to sit to time travel rules. But ultimately, Golden Glider kite

Speaker:

man and Bane, their combined efforts accidentally lead to

Speaker:

Golden gliders mom surviving the explosion, but Lisa Snart

Speaker:

decides she doesn't want to be a mom and abandons her children.

Speaker:

So the timeline is mostly intact, and we find out that in

Speaker:

the next episode that her mom got into some wild scenarios and

Speaker:

ended up in the pit bane's home where he was raised. And by the

Speaker:

time it gets to the pit, they discover it's essentially an

Speaker:

Amazon work work house run by Miss villagin, the sinister Miss

Speaker:

Milligan and she eventually, their combined efforts, are

Speaker:

barely able to escape the pit of capitalism and get her mom out

Speaker:

of the pit. But her mom, again, abandons Golden Glider because

Speaker:

she just isn't up for being a parent. So put that in your back

Speaker:

pocket for a second, because after this Mother's side quest,

Speaker:

we. Get to the real meat of the season, which it's revealed way

Speaker:

back in episode one, Lex Luthor hid a suitcase at Noonan's for a

Speaker:

purpose. We don't really know what it was for, but now it's

Speaker:

revealed that the suitcase just happens to house the anti life

Speaker:

equation. And this the anti life equation is what the final

Speaker:

portion of the season becomes about. And

Speaker:

it is a wild setup even to get to here, because, again, this is

Speaker:

only 10 episodes, so they do spend the first three kind of

Speaker:

setting up the buying of the bar, and then the introduction

Speaker:

of Golden Glider and kite man's relationship, and now this

Speaker:

connection to finding out that Golden Glider had basically been

Speaker:

responsible for the death of her parents. So now that they find

Speaker:

out about the anti life equation, the next step is to

Speaker:

navigate how to tackle the bar that's opening the other side,

Speaker:

the villains, the billigans bar that's there because Helen

Speaker:

billigan wants to use the anti life equation, but also wants to

Speaker:

steal it from Lex Luthor. And we also get introduced to the fact

Speaker:

that dark side, again, dark side is in this show. Yeah, he is the

Speaker:

god daddy. That is literally what it says, God daddy of

Speaker:

malice. So as they try to figure out all this, it is definitely a

Speaker:

group of like, to me, this very much felt like very legends of

Speaker:

tomorrow, because this is like the most random assortment of

Speaker:

characters that don't really get a chance to shine, facing off

Speaker:

against the biggest, baddest of people. So the main twist that

Speaker:

happens here is the change in the dynamic of the relationship

Speaker:

between kite man and Golden Glider, who where tight man

Speaker:

doesn't ever feel like he is measuring up at times to what

Speaker:

Golden Glider wants, while Golden Glider is just like she's

Speaker:

in the position where she doesn't feel she's pretty much

Speaker:

the same way. She's been harmed by the fact that her mom's

Speaker:

abandoned her. She's harmed by the fact that, like she has this

Speaker:

unbelievably powerful power that always ends up killing people,

Speaker:

and she's worried that, like, if she takes that relationship of

Speaker:

theirs further, she's going to end up killing him. So because

Speaker:

all this happens, and her mom gets into her head about, you

Speaker:

know, you should leave kite man, because not really that big of a

Speaker:

deal. I don't want to hang out with you. And kite man wants to

Speaker:

feel like he's a better, cooler person. He goes to Helen

Speaker:

villagen to get a power and instead of it being like, you

Speaker:

know, he already technically has, like, the ability to fly

Speaker:

because of the kite and but it's not he gets super strength or

Speaker:

super speed or telekinesis or anything like that. He gets the

Speaker:

power of a super douche. Yeah, with the flick of a middle

Speaker:

finger, he can make you spill your drink, tie, get your shoes

Speaker:

tied and trip over. And he is such an asshole that his dad now

Speaker:

loves him. So this sudden turn to his new form, Beast Mode.

Speaker:

It's revealed that this was part of an elaborate plan by Helen

Speaker:

villagin. Because Helen villagin thought that Lex Luthor had the

Speaker:

anti life equation. So her plan was at the sexiest villains

Speaker:

Award, which Lex Luthor has won seven times at the awards. Her

Speaker:

plan was to read the competition so that beast mode wins sexiest

Speaker:

villain, and beast mode, after winning sexiest villain, would

Speaker:

distract Lex so much that Helen villigan can steal the briefcase

Speaker:

containing the anti life equation and profit. So that was

Speaker:

the plan, um, which I guess was the easiest version of this plan

Speaker:

for her. So it does happen. The plan does go off without a

Speaker:

hitch, with Bane unintentionally bringing the anti life equation.

Speaker:

But because Golden Glider hates this new change in shock, she

Speaker:

breaks in and gets a hold of the anti life equation first, and

Speaker:

she finds that with the anti life equation, she is able to

Speaker:

order her powers and control her powers, so she's able to use her

Speaker:

powers. Everyone, every villain around her stops in their

Speaker:

tracks. She's able to turn Chuck back, and now they go on the run

Speaker:

from the anti life equation, from Lex Luthor, Helen villagin

Speaker:

and a new challenger. Yeah, we get more insight that malice is

Speaker:

feeding information to dark side, but malice because of the

Speaker:

fact that she is learning what her new life is. Basically,

Speaker:

she's forced. She's the cool, too cool, of a school person

Speaker:

who's not forced to work at the dive bar. So she's feeding this

Speaker:

information to dark side. But because she doesn't want to hurt

Speaker:

her friends, she's feeding wrong information, telling him that

Speaker:

instead of it being that Chuck and Lisa have the briefcase,

Speaker:

it's Helen and Lex. So he's being sent around in circles

Speaker:

while we see that kite man and Golden Glider are now in another

Speaker:

scenario, because this show is filled with cameos from the

Speaker:

previous show. In order to help Chuck break out of the beast

Speaker:

mode, activation is the only way that I can call it right now.

Speaker:

She uses clay face now now voiced by Alan Tudyk, and also

Speaker:

knowing now that in the future, in the DC you formed by James

Speaker:

Gunda, Alan tudick will continue to reprise this role. So for

Speaker:

anybody who's wondering what this will sound like and what

Speaker:

this will be like, watch Harley Quinn and kite man, I guess so,

Speaker:

the other character cameo that we see is Frank, the plant, who

Speaker:

is a being that was created by poison ivy. We don't really have

Speaker:

the specifics of how it came about, but we understand poison

Speaker:

ivy powers. So he, voiced by JB smooth, somehow got enough money

Speaker:

to just open up a resort. And in this resort, he's using it.

Speaker:

They're using it as an opportunity to hide away it.

Speaker:

Cause it gives them some moments to have these like one on one

Speaker:

conversations where kite man is very worried about how Golden

Speaker:

Glider has been acting since she's been holding on to the

Speaker:

briefcase she's been so we put it Frank, very more murderous,

Speaker:

like she attacks people and kills people that even like hit

Speaker:

on kite man, and when she's away for the night, kite man goes for

Speaker:

a swim in the pool. And he and Frank had this great

Speaker:

conversation, in my opinion, about how the reason why the

Speaker:

briefcase hasn't affected Chuck is he kind of doesn't really

Speaker:

have a want. When he gave up his kite, it was for Lisa to be a

Speaker:

better because he thought that he by having a power that would

Speaker:

make everything better. But when he found out that Lisa didn't

Speaker:

want, that, he broke out of it. So he doesn't really have a

Speaker:

want. But because he's been on the run, he hasn't had a moment

Speaker:

to miss his kites, in a way. So we do is get to see some scenes

Speaker:

in which he does have these fond memories of possessing his kite

Speaker:

and how it's traveled with him throughout his entire life. But

Speaker:

it is a really cool concept to hear that the anti life

Speaker:

equation, in this particular sense, works towards basically

Speaker:

attaching on to a person's deepest desire. And for Golden

Speaker:

Glider is for a sense of control, so he knows now that he

Speaker:

has to get the briefcase away from her, because as long as she

Speaker:

has it, she's more likely to become murderous, and it's more

Speaker:

likely that they're going to just keep on getting attacked,

Speaker:

which immediately happens when Helen villigan basically

Speaker:

operating a robot that looks like thinking of like turbo man

Speaker:

From Jingle all the way, I think it was yes, yeah, she's

Speaker:

operating a series of those to attack them, and trying, while

Speaker:

attacking them, also trying to make a deal with them to take

Speaker:

the suitcase back, because she wants to use the anti life

Speaker:

equation for herself once again. Yeah, you can think of it as the

Speaker:

the ring Lord of the Rings. Yes, you know, it's just corrupting

Speaker:

most people, except for plucky hero and for the moment, they're

Speaker:

able to get away. And again, like Lord of the Rings, they try

Speaker:

to throw it into the Mount Doom, which is the nuclear plant Frank

Speaker:

the plant has put his resort to but even throwing it in there

Speaker:

doesn't destroy the anti life equation. So the alternative

Speaker:

plan, after getting momentarily sidetracked by giving a chicken

Speaker:

the anti life equation and turning them into a Godzilla

Speaker:

chicken, is to have Chuck read it and then kill him. Because if

Speaker:

the anti life equation and Chuck become one and Chuck dies, then

Speaker:

it apparently will erase from the universe. And it's requested

Speaker:

for Golden Glider to do this. And in the finale, he is fully

Speaker:

prepared to die. Everyone shows up, Dark Side Hall and villigan,

Speaker:

all their allies. The Legion of doom fights their allies, but as

Speaker:

a really left, left, left turn, Lisa starts, mom returns and

Speaker:

decides to take the anti life equation into the queen of

Speaker:

fables, fairy tale book, thus keeping it away from dark side.

Speaker:

Also, it helps that Martian Manhunter was there for a bit,

Speaker:

and Martian Manhunter just takes the anti life the book and goes

Speaker:

to hide it away somewhere. Yeah, that's that's how they solve

Speaker:

this. It's how to get out of the whole anti life thing.

Speaker:

Yep. And

Speaker:

we end our season with a a nice flying send off, because at one

Speaker:

point Chuck does get his kite back. So he and Golden Glider

Speaker:

are flowing through the sky, flying through the skies,

Speaker:

relishing in the fact that they saved the day, that they made

Speaker:

their relationship stronger, that golden gliders mom is.

Speaker:

Really a part of their lives anymore, and they could just

Speaker:

continue on with running Newtons, a bar that they love

Speaker:

because it's where all their friends are. So with that, that

Speaker:

wraps up our story. Let's, uh, let's hop into the characters we

Speaker:

we had a lot here because, again, this is just basically

Speaker:

the catch all presence for a lot of the characters that probably

Speaker:

don't get as much speaking time in the Harley Quinn show. What

Speaker:

did you think? Did you particularly love a particular

Speaker:

character? Did you think that one character was just overhyped

Speaker:

and they deserved that cape, that that cap that they should

Speaker:

have been wearing? Or Yeah. I mean, it's the obvious out of

Speaker:

the way. Bane is a show stealer. Absolutely a show stealer, Bane.

Speaker:

My favorite episode of this show is highly based on Bane and his

Speaker:

misadventures. And I just think Bane in this weird place where

Speaker:

in any other medium, you would be terrified of Bane, but they

Speaker:

do such a great job at making you he's so full of doubt, he's

Speaker:

so insecure that you forget that he could kill anyone in the cast

Speaker:

with bare, bare minimum effort, like he is the most dangerous

Speaker:

person in the room most of The time, just physically, but the

Speaker:

series does a great job at making you forget that. I think

Speaker:

he does have. He does get a nice arc this season of regaining

Speaker:

that self worth and not letting himself be bounced around by all

Speaker:

the characters around him. So I think it's a really great

Speaker:

evolution for for Bane um, in terms of my favorite small

Speaker:

character, Jeremy Karn, who Vallis on and off again,

Speaker:

boyfriend who, yeah, died, went to hell, but they kicked him out

Speaker:

because he was too evil. I loved his he's on screen for such a

Speaker:

brief time, but you don't need him for longer than that dark

Speaker:

side with Keith, David and his choir this just they hit all the

Speaker:

right notes for me. And to close up my like, we could definitely

Speaker:

talk more about characters, but I do want to say that I love

Speaker:

kite man. I think he is a fantastic character. But the one

Speaker:

thing that didn't really work for me was his turn into beast

Speaker:

mode. I love the concept of it. I just wasn't sold enough that

Speaker:

kite man would do this, would sell out his whole personality

Speaker:

in an instant. Maybe because it happened so quickly that I or,

Speaker:

you know, maybe he should have had a longer time to think about

Speaker:

it, but I do think Chuck's turning to beast mode is

Speaker:

literally out of character. So while I did enjoy the gags, I

Speaker:

did think that getting really hit from me. It just felt like I

Speaker:

was counting down to the seconds that he would turn back, if to

Speaker:

make a direct comparison to, you know, Harley Quinn. There's a

Speaker:

point in the series where psycho, that's psycho pirate,

Speaker:

Doctor psycho, is it that? Oh yeah, Doctor psych, yeah. The

Speaker:

psycho, the the guy that was that got canceled, right? Yeah,

Speaker:

yeah, okay, okay, yeah. There's a point where Doctor psycho

Speaker:

definitively breaks off from the group. And at first I was like,

Speaker:

Is this real? And no, it is definite. And he continues that

Speaker:

energy for the rest of the show. And I believed it. It was a

Speaker:

natural progression to it. So here it was kind of like there

Speaker:

were pieces of it, but kite man's fully embraced, throwing

Speaker:

away his kite, setting it on fire, was a little extreme for

Speaker:

me in such a short time. So I do think that's something that

Speaker:

could have been done another way. I think him making that

Speaker:

choice is a little little too rapid for me. But how are you

Speaker:

feeling about this cast of characters, kite man and his

Speaker:

menagerie of his spool of friends? I agree about the kite

Speaker:

man shift. You know, I think it was, I definitely agree. I think

Speaker:

the throwing the kite into the fire was way too drastic of a

Speaker:

move, especially, and it's like, again, like you said, it was

Speaker:

really out of character for him, because it was like he always

Speaker:

seemed to be a very positive force when it came to the Harley

Speaker:

Quinn show. And even after the fact that once he met Lisa, when

Speaker:

they showed that, and I think it was like season three of the

Speaker:

show, it seemed like he was already going to be a pretty

Speaker:

sure of himself character, so it was kind of shocking to see that

Speaker:

like he still had these like doubts that never really played

Speaker:

a part in the rest of his characterization, especially

Speaker:

when it was like he failed that that move in the very first like

Speaker:

five minutes of the show to help solidify. A win for the Legion

Speaker:

of Doom, even when he's fighting against spoiler and gets like,

Speaker:

brutally beaten up and loses the day, but he still had a strong

Speaker:

level of optimism that I felt was really out of character for

Speaker:

him to then just be like, I need to be something cooler and

Speaker:

better after he had already kind of like, accepted himself in

Speaker:

some ways. So night, man, I just felt like it was, like, a little

Speaker:

weird. So I was, I'm wondering what made, what made them want

Speaker:

to do, like, all these steps was just like, let's get let's,

Speaker:

like, almost feels like they were trying to do the typical

Speaker:

hero route, like, Let's strip him, up his powers, and show the

Speaker:

man behind the kite, but it doesn't. It doesn't really work

Speaker:

in the same way strip him of his non powers.

Speaker:

But I also agree that Bane was a great Oh, actually, I did have

Speaker:

one. I also did not like Rebecca Chen,

Speaker:

yes, sorry I have called her the wrong name. That is my bad.

Speaker:

Okay, we're not going to edit it and correct it or at all. I'm

Speaker:

just that would take a lot of work. Yes, Rebecca Chen is Lisa

Speaker:

snorts mom. That's what I meant to say this whole time. Yes,

Speaker:

please go. Go for it. Yeah, I did not like all like, I think,

Speaker:

you know, it's, I think also it's just like, she just plays

Speaker:

such a good villain, the person that you love to hate, that

Speaker:

ultimately I left the show hating her a lot. So kudos to

Speaker:

just like, I guess, writing her well enough that I hated her.

Speaker:

But oh my gosh. Rebecca Chen was so annoying at times. I was just

Speaker:

like, I feel like she's the real villain of this show, because

Speaker:

just hearing every step that she did that harmed Golden Glider,

Speaker:

that harmed Bane, that even setting her up to be what feels

Speaker:

like the villain. I guess now for season two. Maybe, I don't

Speaker:

know, but it just got to the point where it's just like, I

Speaker:

hate you. But I also got agreed, though, on the Bane front, I

Speaker:

think I'm a it's this show kind of shows me that Bane gotta get,

Speaker:

has to get his shot in some way, like I feel like he deserves a

Speaker:

spin off. I Yeah, I'm so torn because I do want that. I I'm a

Speaker:

little scared that maybe it's like, it'd be too much of a good

Speaker:

thing, maybe too much ice cream, you know? So I'm really torn on

Speaker:

whether I would, don't get me wrong, I would absolutely watch

Speaker:

Bane, Bane, hell yeah, Bane solutions. I would absolutely

Speaker:

watch that. But, yeah, I do the question. It's right in that.

Speaker:

It's right in that gray area of like, if I get too much of it,

Speaker:

am I gonna hate it? Yeah, I don't know. I don't know the

Speaker:

answer to that, yeah. But it just shows that, like, there are

Speaker:

times where it's just like, I think this show, what it did

Speaker:

show me was that, just like from Harley Quinn, there's no

Speaker:

character that is over or under utilized. I think that everybody

Speaker:

had a good balance, even just like, dark size, random chorus,

Speaker:

like, I mean, it was, there were times when it was just like,

Speaker:

Okay, you're you're

Speaker:

dragging this on too long. But it was just like, even the even

Speaker:

the show was picking up on, like, all right, you're singing

Speaker:

for too long. Or, you know, the comedic timing on certain

Speaker:

things, I was just like, all right. That was not gonna have

Speaker:

me belly laughing, but it did have me like, give a little

Speaker:

smirk over the fact that was just like, oh, okay, you're and

Speaker:

they found a way to incorporate it too, with Rebecca revealing

Speaker:

that she has been a part of this chorus this entire time. Yeah.

Speaker:

So I'm glad that they found a way to actually tie everything

Speaker:

all together. Actually, I take that back, there was one

Speaker:

character that I don't know. I felt like they probably didn't

Speaker:

use as much, which I don't know if maybe the story would have

Speaker:

required it or not, or anything. Baby Doll, like, yeah, yeah,

Speaker:

baby for one episode and gone. Yeah, she does disappear, and

Speaker:

she's set up really well when she's in, like, the bar,

Speaker:

competing against Newton's across the street. But yeah,

Speaker:

they don't really do much with her after it. And she's like,

Speaker:

one of my it's one of my favorite Batman The Animated

Speaker:

Series episodes. Yeah. So I was like, oh so great to see her.

Speaker:

Like, back, this is the perfect environment for her. So I do

Speaker:

hope they use more of her. Uh, also again. Shout out to Lance

Speaker:

Reddick again as Lex he the community timing, the

Speaker:

intimidating factor. It all worked really well for me. And I

Speaker:

do want to jump in on Rebecca Chen for a sec too. I think what

Speaker:

personally I didn't like about her character. I again, this is

Speaker:

another thing where I love. The concept of you go back to save a

Speaker:

loved one, but you really shouldn't have, because they're

Speaker:

a terrible person. But I do feel like, as the season went on, she

Speaker:

was just used to get them out of story jams, like, obviously the

Speaker:

conclusion of the story is Rebecca Chen written, but I do

Speaker:

feel my archery alteration here right away is that Rebecca Chen,

Speaker:

in as it's presented, just doesn't want to be a mom. And I

Speaker:

get it. It's a funny joke, but I think it would have been better

Speaker:

if Lisa's powers scared her and she was the whole her that

Speaker:

Rebecca's arc was getting away from her scary daughter, and

Speaker:

then also, yeah, yeah, also having a desire to want to

Speaker:

control it too, like maybe she sees Lisa kill her husband who,

Speaker:

and it's implied that it's an abusive relationship. So maybe

Speaker:

she sees her kill Lisa killed the husband, and goes, oh my

Speaker:

god, I would love to control that power for myself. So her

Speaker:

arc of the series is trying to find a way to control her

Speaker:

daughter, her daughter for her own means, which I think would

Speaker:

sharpen her villainous motivation, instead of her just

Speaker:

being a terrible person. Yeah, she's a terrible person with a

Speaker:

very clear motivation, because, as it's presented her. I have no

Speaker:

idea, really, why she was in the pit, how she ended up there, and

Speaker:

it just feels like the ending would have hit two. If she got

Speaker:

what she wanted, if she was looking for a way to control,

Speaker:

and she got that control in the end, would be great, but it she

Speaker:

just felt just a way to get us from point A to point B, in a

Speaker:

lot of places where they could have used other characters.

Speaker:

Would you have wanted her to have a different kind of

Speaker:

personality in the very beginning? Because in the show,

Speaker:

they present it as, like, she's just as much of a jerk in like,

Speaker:

before everything happened, like she also didn't want to be with

Speaker:

her kids, even before that, like, would you have wanted to

Speaker:

be that? Maybe she was like, the, the kind mother that

Speaker:

unfortunately was in this bad situation with her husband, and

Speaker:

then eventually, upon the death, learning or seeing everything

Speaker:

that happened, she makes that flip. I think she could show

Speaker:

signs of flaws, like, I think she could have been like, you

Speaker:

know, stuck in between a rock and a hard place. Of, you know,

Speaker:

she can't leave her child with her husband, right? But she also

Speaker:

can't leave her husband with a child either, you know, she's

Speaker:

stuck. So I think if we would have presented more, and again,

Speaker:

we kind of get that I think it's very subtle, but it could have

Speaker:

been a little I wouldn't have minded that being more obvious

Speaker:

of her dilemma of being stuck because her desire for freedom

Speaker:

drives her for the rest of the series. So I think we could have

Speaker:

made it a little bit more explicit, and you can tweak her

Speaker:

personality a bit. I don't think she should be an angel by any

Speaker:

means in any version of the story, but I think resenting it

Speaker:

kind of like the Harry Potter treatment, how the aunt and

Speaker:

uncle resented Harry because he was special and they weren't.

Speaker:

And they they always were mad at that. I think we could have done

Speaker:

something here with that, where maybe they she, they could have

Speaker:

had a good relationship, but because of this power, because

Speaker:

she's always scared her daughter would top her to bits, it could

Speaker:

have caused that tension, instead of it just being, I hate

Speaker:

you. I don't want to be a mom, which is fine again. It's fine

Speaker:

for comedy, but I think they could have gone a little bit

Speaker:

further with it. Yeah, I hear that. I hear that especially

Speaker:

because it was just like, that was kind of like the thing I

Speaker:

felt like I was missing. I didn't really know how to

Speaker:

explain about Rebecca, because I was just like, at the end of it

Speaker:

again, like I hated her character, but it was just like,

Speaker:

was it because that was the goal, or was it because, like,

Speaker:

this was just a character that wasn't really well written, or

Speaker:

anything like that. And it's not saying that it's either or. It's

Speaker:

just like, you said, kind of like, somewhere in the middle

Speaker:

there, it just needed some fine tuning, which I'm surprised that

Speaker:

it was. I guess I don't know. Maybe it's just like, because

Speaker:

it's an ensemble cast, maybe there's just like,

Speaker:

unfortunately, some people are gonna slip through the cracks.

Speaker:

Because I did feel that like malice had a great

Speaker:

characterization throughout this particular season, like you

Speaker:

actually saw the character development happening for her,

Speaker:

from when she first starts out as, like, your typical kind of

Speaker:

like, influencer doesn't really care about anybody else around

Speaker:

her, to now being like, I feel like this is just something that

Speaker:

happens to people in general, where it's just like, you know,

Speaker:

you're a 20 year Old and now all of a sudden, your best friend is

Speaker:

like the 60 year old person who's been working at the

Speaker:

organization for like 50 years or something, and now she's at a

Speaker:

point where she's actually showing care to other people. So

Speaker:

it was nice to see this development of her that happened

Speaker:

in one season. And so I'm excited to see that if the show

Speaker:

does get a second season or anything, because I don't think

Speaker:

it's come up or anything about if this show has been renewed or

Speaker:

not, you know where that journey takes her, like, is she gonna

Speaker:

continue on building bridges and making friendships? Is she gonna

Speaker:

get a new boyfriend that isn't the murderous Jeremy coon who

Speaker:

basically got kicked out of hell, like, what else can we

Speaker:

write for her? Because I do feel like she did a great job.

Speaker:

Definitely want to see more of her and her and this version of

Speaker:

Lex as well. I think that, I guess that what really connects

Speaker:

me to this Lex is because it's especially what I've always

Speaker:

grown up seeing about Lex, whereas this like you the

Speaker:

racially ambiguous Lex, yes, but you gotta love the racially

Speaker:

ambiguous Lex, because I feel like that's the LEX that pushes

Speaker:

the boundaries of what is comedic as well as what is a

Speaker:

straight up super villain plan like Clancy Brown did a great

Speaker:

job as Lex in Superman The anime series in that Justice League

Speaker:

era. Now we have it again, this time voiced by Lance Reddick for

Speaker:

the first more than half of the season here. And it was just

Speaker:

just as great, same vibes as like this is a person who will

Speaker:

call out anybody for interrupting him doing the I

Speaker:

think one of my favorite things I saw about this particular Lex,

Speaker:

kind of jumping in a little bit to um, scenes that stuck out to

Speaker:

me was that Lex never actually was at noon. He's never stepped

Speaker:

foot in Noonan's every single time he was in that bar, it was

Speaker:

a TV screen, even when he had the gun pointed at Noonan. It

Speaker:

was just like, how was that going to be effective? But in

Speaker:

the end, it was,

Speaker:

yeah. It was a great yeah. This Lex was just picture perfect.

Speaker:

They've always gotten Lex right on Harley Quinn and yeah, this

Speaker:

is a another great step forward for his character, like

Speaker:

including immediately folding when dark side got involved.

Speaker:

He's like, Yeah, I folded because I didn't want to die.

Speaker:

Like, instantly. I also, yeah, really quickly. Want to say

Speaker:

Golden Glider. I don't want to glance over her, you know, the

Speaker:

other star of the show. I think Golden Glider gets really

Speaker:

interesting when the mother stuff comes in, all the stuff I

Speaker:

just said about, some gripes I have with her, but Golden Glider

Speaker:

reads very similar to Harley Quinn at the beginning of this,

Speaker:

where she's this kind of like slightly off kilter person who

Speaker:

does have genuine love in her heart and genuine care for the

Speaker:

people she loves, but is also a ticking time bomb that can go

Speaker:

off at any second. She's just a lot more dangerous than Harley

Speaker:

Quinn in that in that department. So at first she is,

Speaker:

she does come off kind of like this is the Harley Quinn of the

Speaker:

episode of the series, but it is when we get into her desire for

Speaker:

self control and her relationship with her mother,

Speaker:

that she really gets those layers as a character and

Speaker:

becomes her own separate entity. So I did like her journey and

Speaker:

where she ends and how she reluctantly gives up that sense

Speaker:

of control with the anti life equation for love. So I think

Speaker:

she had a really nice journey. It took a little while to get

Speaker:

started and really get the ball rolling on her arc, but I do

Speaker:

think it does. She did land the triple axel. She did skate my

Speaker:

weight, her way into my heart. Since we did go in on character,

Speaker:

because there are a lot of them, we didn't get fables. We didn't

Speaker:

get into. She was great. Didn't get into, we didn't get into

Speaker:

doubles, yeah, doubles. Um, great gag. We'll talk about it

Speaker:

definitely. But and Goldilocks, who was surprisingly

Speaker:

yo, okay, there was ever a character I will ever throw

Speaker:

hands on

Speaker:

Goldilocks. I love her, but, like, it was just too much.

Speaker:

Yeah, there were times when she said the milkshake was too hot.

Speaker:

I almost was like, All right, you know what? No more

Speaker:

milkshake. Okay, you can sit here and starve. Get it away.

Speaker:

It's okay. She's a fictional character. People before you get

Speaker:

all up in the arms, she's a fictional character like both in

Speaker:

the show and in real life,

Speaker:

no children are harmed. So since this, the series didn't

Speaker:

primarily focus on fight scenes. It wasn't really about what that

Speaker:

is. I think we can go straight to scenes that stuck out for

Speaker:

good or bad. I have to, yeah. So I have to again highlight the

Speaker:

portal potty episode where Bane first travels through time to

Speaker:

the 80s. And it really is Bain spotlight episode, as he

Speaker:

discovers there's a great gag where he's looking at the 80s of

Speaker:

like, people are smoking, people are like, slinging asbestos all

Speaker:

around. Yeah. And he's like the 80s was an uncivilized and

Speaker:

dangerous place. I love it. This Bain highlight episode is a

Speaker:

proof of concept, if there ever was one, if you want to make a

Speaker:

bane show, show them this. I also love the line of when the

Speaker:

giant chicken is rampaging. There's a gag where the giant

Speaker:

chicken is just biting the heads off of everybody on the Ferris

Speaker:

wheel, and at 1.1 of them is like, I'm a vegan, and the

Speaker:

chicken clucks. Very good. You are spared for now, it's such a

Speaker:

great it's such a great gag. What's add some other stuff, but

Speaker:

what seats I got for you?

Speaker:

I You hit a lot of mine, because I love that chicken gag. I

Speaker:

thought it was hilarious.

Speaker:

Something else too, was the dark side chorus. I thought that they

Speaker:

just had some very comical things to say at times,

Speaker:

especially when I think, what was it when they found out about

Speaker:

the tracker in the in Cheshire, the cat, mouse's cat, and they

Speaker:

were like, Who do we speak to? And like, what is happening? But

Speaker:

in the more Pinnacle scene, in terms of the show, I did really

Speaker:

enjoy the conversation that kite man had when he was in the

Speaker:

swimming bar with Frank the plants, and they had that deep

Speaker:

conversation as to why the anti life equation wasn't going to

Speaker:

affect kite man is because he didn't really have anything that

Speaker:

he felt like he needed more in his life that was like, like a

Speaker:

personal insecurity of his, like, the whole show, the

Speaker:

premise of the show does seem to be like a man who's down on his

Speaker:

luck finds this new opportunity and now he's, like, trying to

Speaker:

build himself back up. So by episode eight, they affect, they

Speaker:

basically, like had that revelation for him. So now it's

Speaker:

just like the last two episodes was just like, let's just clean

Speaker:

up narrative, clean up the plot, finish out the story lines. So

Speaker:

it was great to see that he can have that conversation,

Speaker:

especially in this show, knowing that he never failed, really at

Speaker:

any point, he made some bad decisions, yes, but he he got to

Speaker:

the point where he was more sure of himself and what he wanted.

Speaker:

And all he wanted was to just show how much that he loved

Speaker:

Golden Glider, show that to her, show her that she doesn't need

Speaker:

this strong level of control. And I think that, like that ends

Speaker:

up being something that you see even build upon throughout the

Speaker:

series, especially as you saw when they were back in time in

Speaker:

the 80s. And he talks to young Golden Glider to try to calm her

Speaker:

down. There's like, a, you know, I call it, I'm calling it now,

Speaker:

like, kind of like the, um, the captain america moment. And this

Speaker:

is a big claim, but it's like the Captain America moment in

Speaker:

Asia Voltron, where everybody's doing the, let's lift up Thor's

Speaker:

hammer to see if it actually works. And you see that there's

Speaker:

a slight movement to the hammer. It kind of was that for for kite

Speaker:

man here, where he's, like, he's trying to calm Golden Glider

Speaker:

down. There's like a moment in which she does, kind of, like

Speaker:

the younger Lisa Snart does seem to have, like a moment of

Speaker:

clarity. Unfortunately, it doesn't. Things ensue, and they

Speaker:

have to show like one parent had to get taken out. But I was

Speaker:

actually really happy to see that kite man stayed true to

Speaker:

this particular part of his character, in this particular

Speaker:

scene in which he's like, Yes, let's go back to the kite man,

Speaker:

to the Chuck Brown, even that was always sure of himself that

Speaker:

didn't care what anybody thought, that love rolling

Speaker:

around with the kite. Yeah, he has some issues with his dad,

Speaker:

but it wasn't going to knock away the the fact that he was

Speaker:

just like, I'm going to fly around my kite. I'm going to use

Speaker:

all these, like, kite weaponry that I have where I'm, like,

Speaker:

pressing a button on my head or a button on my belt that sends

Speaker:

off little things. So I really enjoyed that scene, because it

Speaker:

was definitely something I feel like most people should just

Speaker:

watch, and when they realize it's like, Hey, this is a person

Speaker:

who as weird and quirky as they are, they accepted themselves

Speaker:

and knowing that they didn't need to get, like some other

Speaker:

crazy level power up. And was also trying to show that, like

Speaker:

telling his partner and the people that he loves that like,

Speaker:

Hey, you don't need that either. You don't need the suitcase. You

Speaker:

don't need to if you feel like this, this, this power, this

Speaker:

crazy power that kills people, is a part of you. You don't need

Speaker:

to try to hide it. Like, don't be afraid that you're going to

Speaker:

kill me. Because even as the show progressed, it showed that

Speaker:

she learned how to control it and learn how to build a

Speaker:

relationship with him. So tight man. Great conversation while

Speaker:

wearing a speedo, not quite the scene the scenery of what is

Speaker:

expected for this kind of conversation, but I appreciate

Speaker:

that you had it. Yeah. And speaking of of speedo, well,

Speaker:

less than a Speedo. I. I do have to give kudos to the fight in

Speaker:

the spa where Golden Glider ends up completely naked and blurred

Speaker:

out, absolutely slaughtering legions of enemies, very, very

Speaker:

weird, off kilter and off well done. And I also have to

Speaker:

highlight what might be the strangest scene in this

Speaker:

franchise, both this and Harley Quinn. So this running guy with

Speaker:

Queen of fables keeps getting on to different bodies. So at one

Speaker:

point, because doubles, one of the heads is shot off of

Speaker:

doubles. He's a conjoined twin. At one point, Queen of fables

Speaker:

jumps onto doubles body and they fall for each other, and at one

Speaker:

point start making out. And so she's using the zombie hand of

Speaker:

his dead brother and making out with him while they're on the

Speaker:

same body. I truly, truly don't know what to do with that. I

Speaker:

can't, I I cannot objectively say whether that is bad or good,

Speaker:

but I do have to point out that it happened, and someone thought

Speaker:

of this, and I don't know I, I guess that's what it was leading

Speaker:

up to. I don't I just have to make sure people know that this

Speaker:

happened. Yeah, um, I have no notes on that. I also will just

Speaker:

say that that happens multiple times, and it was very

Speaker:

surprising to see.

Speaker:

I need to know who wrote that. I just need to know, yeah, whoever

Speaker:

you are, please send us a message. Just just send it email

Speaker:

to blink twice if you need

Speaker:

help. Oh, man, but yeah. So I think the show, the other thing

Speaker:

in particular about the show is like we talked about that, but

Speaker:

like is a particularly gory show. Like I think they

Speaker:

definitely leaned into the comedic sides of the gore like,

Speaker:

you know, I would say that it was palpable compared to the

Speaker:

stuff that I've seen in Velma in the two seasons and the

Speaker:

Halloween special that produced. I definitely felt like this was

Speaker:

done a lot better than what we were seeing in Velma, Harley

Speaker:

Quinn doesn't have as much Gore, in my opinion, as this show had

Speaker:

like, so it was shocking to see how much it had. But it wasn't

Speaker:

done in a way where it was just like, I left feeling disgusted

Speaker:

or feeling like I had to throw up. It was just like, Alright.

Speaker:

That happened. Move along. Uh, yeah. So last thing I say before

Speaker:

we give our verdicts, I want to say, I do give kudos to the show

Speaker:

for having the self restraint to just use Harley once. Not a lot

Speaker:

of shows could do that when they're a spin off. So I do give

Speaker:

kudos one Harley get out of there. Very well, very good,

Speaker:

very good. So, yeah. So now we've gone through the

Speaker:

characters, the weird, good, bad moments the story. So where are

Speaker:

you kite man, hell yeah. Is it a Hell yeah, cape or is a cap for

Speaker:

you?

Speaker:

This? This was the hardest decision for me. I want to, I

Speaker:

really want to give this a cape, um, I think what pulls it ahead

Speaker:

for me is just Bane like,

Speaker:

is it's funny that it's not, it's not even the tissue of

Speaker:

characters. It is Bane. Like, I think his journey through the

Speaker:

commentary, through everything that's happening, was enough

Speaker:

that, like, really got me to, like, stick through and be

Speaker:

involved in the show. Like, I remember when I first watched it

Speaker:

through, I felt like it because, especially because the show

Speaker:

released weekly, it felt like very long storytelling, and it's

Speaker:

we, we've highlighted that like the show does jump around to

Speaker:

like. It starts off with, you know, just them opening up a

Speaker:

bar. I kind of wish we saw more of that before we jumped into

Speaker:

like. Now we're just talking about, like, dark side, anti

Speaker:

life equation stuff. So I think the reason why I'm giving it a

Speaker:

cape is because of the fact that it's just like the stuff that's

Speaker:

happening behind the scenes is enough that will keep a person

Speaker:

interested, as it did for me, I do think, though, that the story

Speaker:

could have been a little tighter. Um, the other issue

Speaker:

that does come up here is that, unfortunately, you do need to

Speaker:

watch, like, up to Harlequin season three and the Valentine's

Speaker:

Day holiday special to truly understand this show. I think

Speaker:

that like it will cause confusion while watching it, but

Speaker:

you won't. It won't mean that you can't completely, wouldn't

Speaker:

like watch through the entire thing, but the just the fact

Speaker:

that it's just like the humor of it, it's a fun show to have in

Speaker:

the background. It's a low cave. It's not anything. It's. Flying

Speaker:

real low, like a kite on a very unwind day. I just wish that it

Speaker:

probably tie together that main story a bit more. Either it be

Speaker:

like, let's just jump all in on the anti life equation stuff, or

Speaker:

let's just jump all in on like, let's open up the bar, because

Speaker:

there's a tonal shift in the show, so but I think the

Speaker:

conversations and the fun moments that are happening in

Speaker:

the background, those are the things that keep you

Speaker:

entertained, which is why I'm giving it a cake, because I'm

Speaker:

hoping that maybe by season two, they take that approach of just

Speaker:

like, let's just focus on one particular story throughout. If

Speaker:

they do get season two, let's take one particular story. Let's

Speaker:

run that through. We only got 10 episodes. You don't need to,

Speaker:

like, create something brand new. Every episode like this is

Speaker:

not network television where you have to stretch out one

Speaker:

particular plot point across 20,000 episodes like we did in

Speaker:

the past. Like it's easy to do this now, even cut the shows

Speaker:

down a little bit, maybe if you wanted to focus in on the gore

Speaker:

or more of like Mo and Queen of fables on one body, making out

Speaker:

kind of scenario do that. I don't, I don't know, but focus

Speaker:

on just really tightening up the story. And I'll give her the

Speaker:

cape for now, because it does feel like it has substance in

Speaker:

the background. What about you? Is this a Hell yeah, or, as I

Speaker:

said at the end of Episode Eight, a hell no. This was also

Speaker:

a very difficult decision for me, but ultimately I have to say

Speaker:

it's a hell no for me, I'm so sorry. This is, this is the

Speaker:

hardest cap I've ever given, and it is, it barely, barely got

Speaker:

here. But I don't want to take away from the show being funny.

Speaker:

It's so funny, it's so entertaining. But as you alluded

Speaker:

to and you know, my thing is, you cannot watch the show by

Speaker:

itself. You have to have absolutely watched three seasons

Speaker:

plus the special of Harley Quinn to really care about this

Speaker:

character. I cannot imagine anyone coming to this series

Speaker:

just as their entry point into this Harley Quinn world. I don't

Speaker:

think it's possible, I think if Bane was the lead character, you

Speaker:

could have because Bane has the name recognition for it. And I

Speaker:

again, this is something, this show has so many great concepts,

Speaker:

but conceptually, I get why you want kite man, because he's the

Speaker:

nobody to lead this, but he needs to constantly be

Speaker:

surrounded by somebody's for this to work. The show really,

Speaker:

really works when Lex, when Bane, when dark side are in the

Speaker:

room, without them, the show doesn't work as much. So I think

Speaker:

overall, too. I think the show has a confidence issue in what

Speaker:

it wants to believe in, because when it got into kite man's

Speaker:

insecurities, as you mentioned in the well written scenes, when

Speaker:

they got into to Lisa snarts insecurities, when it really

Speaker:

dived into Bane the show really shined. And not saying the show

Speaker:

had to always be that, but I think there's an opportunity for

Speaker:

this show to have been brought in more villains going through

Speaker:

crises and coming to the bar and like, really exploring their

Speaker:

insecurities and stuff. I think there was potential there, and I

Speaker:

think the confidence issue would have also helped weave the plot

Speaker:

together more. I did not like Martian Manhunter coming out of

Speaker:

nowhere. I think that was way, way too left of Martian

Speaker:

Manhunter was just here that was not set up at all. And I don't

Speaker:

know it to me, it kind of feels like at some point either they

Speaker:

were mandated to put in an heavier overarching story,

Speaker:

instead of it being story of the week, because just there was

Speaker:

just to have no setup for Martian Manhunter. Was really,

Speaker:

really weird, especially if this is a team that's worked on

Speaker:

Harley and Quinn. There's nothing in Harley Quinn in terms

Speaker:

of the end game of the seasons that wasn't alluded to when Dr

Speaker:

cycle turns on Harley. There's seeds of that throughout the

Speaker:

season when the Legion of Doom, when Harley institutes between

Speaker:

being an anti hero and the hero and a villain, that's the thing

Speaker:

of the whole scene. And like her eventual clash of poison ivy,

Speaker:

that's the whole season for it to they they take careful time

Speaker:

to set up. And here I just don't see how the pieces fit together

Speaker:

when I look back. For example, what does Lex Luthor want to do

Speaker:

with the anti life equation? Yeah, it's just the the kill

Speaker:

Superman. But then it's just like, how? Like, what does it

Speaker:

do? Like, right? We only get one explanation, but it's like a

Speaker:

world ending thing. And I'm just like, I'm assuming Lex Luthor a

Speaker:

man who professes himself as like. On the world, smartest

Speaker:

people on the planet will know that this could be an issue and

Speaker:

would not be able to find a way to just kill Superman in

Speaker:

particular. Yeah, and even better, even more so his

Speaker:

justification for not using it right away was he was waiting

Speaker:

till Superman's birthday to kill him, which, again, it's funny.

Speaker:

It's really funny, but it makes no sense as to why Luthor would

Speaker:

hide it in the bar, because later on, Helen villigan is the

Speaker:

one who's like, actually, I want to keep it from everybody, so

Speaker:

their motivation should be flipped. Lex should have put it

Speaker:

at Noonan's because he didn't want anybody to get it,

Speaker:

including Helen. Yeah, that makes a lot more sense, because

Speaker:

Helen, when she gets close to it, wants to use it right away.

Speaker:

So if you flip that the whole season, makes a lot more sense,

Speaker:

because you're telling me Lex didn't use the anti life

Speaker:

equation, at least, didn't start using it just because he was

Speaker:

waiting till Superman's birthday. Bit of a stretch for

Speaker:

this series, because, again, they're all their rivals as

Speaker:

usual, but I haven't seen the intense rivalry on Harley Quinn

Speaker:

between the two. To say that he's waiting until the birthday

Speaker:

of Superman to do this, I believe that on Superman and

Speaker:

Lois Absolutely. But so the plot, for me, the overarching

Speaker:

plot they're trying to run. The more you look into it, the

Speaker:

closer you look, breaks down a lot, and it's resolved really

Speaker:

messily. And it distracts from all the great character work, I

Speaker:

think, have they had more confidence in using the Noonan's

Speaker:

cast to get to the end game, more because they kind of just

Speaker:

get all put to the side and just used to make gags about I fought

Speaker:

in World War One. Queen of fables is really nerfed in the

Speaker:

final battle too. So I do think this show wanted to be a sitcom,

Speaker:

but it ended up trying to incorporate a larger plot. It's

Speaker:

at odds with itself, and really needs Harley Quinn as a

Speaker:

backbone. So that's why I'm giving it a cap. I just don't

Speaker:

think it can stand on its own yet. And what I would hope in a

Speaker:

season two, if it gets to season two, that it goes more episodic.

Speaker:

And yes, you can have a building plot line, but I think it still

Speaker:

needs to be more episodic, so that people who don't know who

Speaker:

kite man is have never seen an episode of Harley Quinn have an

Speaker:

easier entry point. They can see villains. They can see heroes,

Speaker:

which you really didn't get any of, which I think, yeah, would

Speaker:

have been fun to see Aquaman walk into that bar, you know. So

Speaker:

I'm hoping in season two, if they get to season two, they

Speaker:

really take advantage of the the full Toy Box obscure villains,

Speaker:

and use that to drive the story, as opposed to having a bunch of

Speaker:

obscure villains just kind of stand around until it comes time

Speaker:

to wrap it up so painful. I did love this show. I did have a

Speaker:

great time, but I just don't think it's earned its Cape quite

Speaker:

yet. That's a solid reason. So just to recap, if you want

Speaker:

enjoyment and gore, this is the cape. If you don't want to think

Speaker:

about it, you're going to have a great time. Just don't think

Speaker:

about it. Alright. So with that, we're going to wrap up our

Speaker:

episode here. We're continuing on, though, in our running back

Speaker:

season, of course, there was one other big summer drop. DC,

Speaker:

surprisingly, had a go

Speaker:

everything this past summer, including the ball in the Joker

Speaker:

two. Oh,

Speaker:

but yes, we're going to talk about the Joker's greatest

Speaker:

adversary that was never going to be featured in a joker

Speaker:

Joaquin Phoenix production,

Speaker:

because our next episode is going to be the Caped Crusader.

Speaker:

Yes, that's right. Bruce Timm was just like, You know what? I

Speaker:

hear you like Batman. So I'm gonna give you more Batman on a

Speaker:

streaming service where we could probably add cursing. I don't

Speaker:

know if it has cursing. To tell you the truth, we're gonna

Speaker:

we're gonna recap that for you next.
